Prior to the commencement of Warburton Mission in 1934, the Yarnangu (Ngaanyatjarra people of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands) lived a tribal and semi-nomadic life. Their nomadic movement was not random, it was determined by water availability (see image below for a photo of a traditional source of water, a rockhole that fills with rainwater).

There is no seasonal rain in the desert region, but when it does rain, it is an opportunity to roam far and wide for a greater variety of food including kangaroo, emu, and large birds called The Australian Bustard, known in the local language as nganutee.
